چکیده

Iron in groundwater is one of the problems that render the water unsuitable for drinking. The concentration above 0.3 mg/L is common in groundwater. The conventional method of removal is by precipitation under oxic condition. In this study, iron removal under anaerobic conditions was examined by batch experiment as a main purpose. The process involved by purging of groundwater samples with H2S to form iron sulfide. Removal up to 83% for 1 mg/L iron solution was achieved. The removal efficiency dropped to 82% and 75% for the higher initial iron concentrations 3.55 and 5.01 mg/L, respectively. The average residual sulfide concentration in water after the process was 25μg/L. The Eh level during the process was -272 mV. The removal process was found to follow the first order reaction with average rate constant of 4.52 x 10. The half-life for the concentrations to reduce from initial values was 157 minutes. Keywords—Anaerobic, chemical kinetics, hydrogen sulfide, iron, rate constant

Bioremediation of benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes in groundwater under iron-amended, sulfate-reducing conditions.

Elevated concentrations of sulfide in groundwater (approximately 63 mg S(2-)/L in water and 500 mg dissolved H2S/L dissipating from the wellhead) at a field site near South Lovedale (OK, USA) were inhibiting the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that are known to degrade contaminants, including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes. Elevated concentrations of these contaminants,...

Arsenic bioremediation by biogenic iron oxides and sulfides.

Microcosms containing sediment from an aquifer in Cambodia with naturally elevated levels of arsenic in the associated groundwater were used to evaluate the effectiveness of microbially mediated production of iron minerals for in situ As remediation. The microcosms were first incubated without amendments for 28 days, and the release of As and other geogenic chemicals from the sediments into the...

Investigation on Removal of Coliform from Groundwater Using Sandy Filters Modified with Nanoscale Zerovalent Iron (Case Study: Ilam City)

Background & objectives: In recent years, iron nanoparticles have been successfully used to remove water pollutants. Fecal coliform is one of the parameters that reduces water quality and its removal is essential. The aim of the present study is using nanoscale zerovalent iron particles to enhance the usual sand filters in removal of fecal coliform of groundwater in Ilam city. Methods: Water s...

Modeling in situ iron removal from groundwater with trace elements such as As

The cyclic injection of oxygenated water in an aquifer may induce in situ iron removal from groundwater. During injection of aerated water, sorbed ferrous iron is displaced by cations, oxidized in the pore space, and precipitated as ferric iron oxyhydroxide. During pumping, ferrous iron is sorbed from groundwater on the exchange and sorption sites, and the breakthrough of dissolved iron is reta...

Control of sulfide in sewer systems by dosage of iron salts: comparison between theoretical and experimental results, and practical implications.

Removal of sulfide species from municipal sewage conveyance systems by dosage of iron salts is a relatively common practice. However, the reactions that occur between dissolved iron and sulfide species in municipal sewage media have not yet been fully quantified, and practical application relies heavily on empirical experience, which is often site specific. The aim of this work was to combine t...
